The events occur during the second world war on the now infamous peninsula of Crimea. The movie tells the captivating and historically based story of the Crimean tatar muslim woman and kindergarten teacher Saide Arifova (1916-2007). In risking her own life she protects and saves Jewish children by taking them into her orphanage as Crimean tatars, giving them new names, teaching them a new language, customs and prayers. Later, she again saved them from the Soviets when the Crimean Tatars were deported from Crimea. Although she managed to mislead the Germans, it did not save herself from deportation as a Crimean Tatar. Based on an incredible true story, close to one hundred children celebrate the bravery of a single woman, and pays testament to the ingenuity and gall that allows us to survive in unlikeliest of circumstances.
